When it comes to evaluating the quality of inpatient hospital care, the voice of the patient experience can be a vital barometer that helps improve performance. We measure patients’ perception of their hospital stay, and use this information to innovate the way we communicate with patients and empower them in their care.
What are we measuring and why?
Patient experiences of care measures include a wide range of factors that provide a broad view of how patients experience hospital care on a day-to-day basis. To measure patients' experiences of care, we rely on the HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey developed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This instrument collects feedback from adult patients who have been recently discharged from the hospital. HCAHPS results are also publicly reported to CMS and posted to the U.S. Health and Human Services Hospital Compare website.
